When I lived in San Diego, this spot was right near my apartment, and has been my go to SD sushi spot ever since! Everything is reasonable priced, and it's such a cute spot. Our servers are always super kind, although I do always feel like they're trying to get us out super fast.
This time we started with the fried chicken gyoza and each got a miso soup. You can get the gyoza steamed or fried, both are delicious! The miso soup is also great, tastes exactly how you would imagine it would. I got the shrimp tempura cut roll as my meal, and it was super delicious.
Love this spot and would definitely recommend!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jan 18, 2024
Unfortunately, Kinoyume Sushi & Grill is just mediocre. None of the entrees blew us away. It's a good sushi spot and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the restaurant, it's just that we've had better.
You can find Kinoyume in the busy area of "The Shops at La Jolla Village" or the area where "Sprinkles" is located. Parking can be a hard as that area is super congested since there are a ton of store fronts. Service was good and quick. Everything was justly priced and the menu was standard. It consisted of sushi rolls, ramen, dessert & you know, the usual. Place was clean & was not too busy for a Sunday afternoon.
We had the Garlic Butter Edamame [$7] which we loved! More garlic butter on everything plsss. Also ordered the 5 piece nigiri platter [$19]. This I thought was a great deal! Had the three usual, salmon, tuna & yellowtail and the last two were Chef's choice. I forgot what they were (albacore? & something) but they were very tasty as well. Generous portions of fish were given as seen in the pic.
Again, nothing wrong occurred here. Everything was fine... but it was just that, "fine."Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 22, 2023
If you're craving sushi in a cozy little bar in La Jolla Square, this is the place to go. It can get a bit pricy but that's what happens when you deal with sushi. This place isn't too busy and you can usually find a seat pretty quick here!
I highly recommend the Katana Roll; the lemon adds a perfect kick to each bite.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 112315384379Apr 9, 20241 check-in
My new fav sushi place!! Omg what can I say.. Everything was phenomenal. We tried sushi, yellowtail belly that melts in your mouth, partially cooked roll. fresh rolls. See pics. Can't say enough. Reasonably priced and chef knows his fish. Sakes available , open for lunch too. Small but incredible!

Given that there are so many sushi places in San Diego and almost all of them have the same suppliers, use the same ingredients, etc, It's really hard to stand out. Unfortunately, Kinoyume just falls under every other sushi place for me. I think the let down for me was how small the rolls are and how high of the cost is. I do appreciate the Japanese ambiance and friendly service but in regards to value it's not particularly my first choice when it comes to sushi.

One of the best sushi place in La Jolla. The restaurant is spacious and clean with very friendly chef. The food come out quickly. You can request special sushi and rolls. The food is delicious. I usually order nigiri plater and let the chef decide what is good. Always surprisingly good.

The food come out relatively quick (depend on how busy). It's easy to ask for modification. The quality of the fish is great. I like the tempura a lot. The price was okay but you might find it in the expensive side for some sushi roll menu. The service was good. I like to come for lunch better than dinner because it's less crowded and cheaper.
Nov 16, 2020Previous reviewThe quality of the food is very consistent. I have been multiple times now and have tried more things on the menu. The tiramisu is very good if you like not super sweet desert. They take COVID measure seriously so you will feel safe dining outside. It's not crowded but booking in advance is easy both online and by phone. If you want to order online do it from their website directly is cheaper than through delivery apps like UberEat or DoorDash. Or just call and order.
Oct 28, 2019Previous reviewWorth the price you pay. It was a bit expensive if you want to dine cheap Japanese restaurant. The menu was not super fancy but simple and good. The food was great and the restaurant too crowded. We made reservation on Saturday night and we got the table right away. The food came out relatively fast. The staff was great. Dish decors were appetizing and tasty.

I live near here and always pass by here but a year later, just finally stepped in. I was really happy with my experience!
The fish was really fresh. I really enjoyed the quality of the fish. I didn't get sashimi this time, but I definitely will in the future. The prices are reasonable as well, and I was pleased that the portions were a good size. I really liked the Katana and the Al Capone Roll. The Chirashi don was also excellent, but I wish there were more fish.
Service was fast and efficient. They were very polite and pleasant.
Great date location. Will definitely be me and my boyfriend's new go to sushi spotHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 3 - 80120101Sep 10, 2023
I came here for dinner today and it wasn't super busy, I was seated at a table immediately and the place seemed nice enough. I ordered the cucumber sunomono salad, which was okay, it wasn't completely marinated in the vinegar sauce but the seaweed on top was flavorful. I ordered the rocket roll and spider roll(?) it was like a spider roll but I don't think that's what it was called on the menu. The sushi was decent and I had no complaints with the food. I almost thought about going back if not for a glaring service issue.
My gripe is there was a waitress who brought out my food and basically threw it on the table without confirming the orders were mine, and then proceeded to ignore me while checking in on the other tables. I thought there was a server change but they all periodically went around, but for some reason she chose to ignore me. This really made me wonder what I did but I ate alone and kept to myself, so who knows. I took off one star for this attitude that was directed at me. This really ruined the experience overall so I won't be back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 2
